MIKE GEORGE MAKES THE COVER OF CANADIAN INSURANCE TOP BROKER MAGAZINE

Canadian Insurance Top Broker Magazine (CITB) is a leading national insurance industry publication. Every December, CITB features a CEO of an insurance company to do a feature article. We’re proud to share that Trisura’s President and CEO, Mike George, was chosen as 2016’s featured CEO.

Copies of the magazine are available on newsstands and by subscription, or you can follow this link to read the interview with Mike, and find out how Trisura went from an idea on a napkin to a hundred million dollar insurance company.

OUR GREATEST ASSET

OUR GREATEST ASSET

BY: TINA MCAVELLA

“A COMPANY’S EMPLOYEES ARE ITS GREATEST ASSET, AND YOUR PEOPLE ARE YOUR PRODUCT.”

-RICHARD BRANSON

I couldn’t agree more with Branson, and believe his statement is particularly true of Trisura. In fact, I often say that our business goes home on the elevators every night, so clearly I believe our people are our greatest asset. But they are also our product.
At the end of the day, Trisura is built on a foundation of hiring great people who fit our culture and develop strong relationships with our brokers and their customers. We exist to create exceptional experiences for all of our stakeholders because we believe the business can be done better. It all starts with our people. That truly is our secret ingredient.
The insurance business is an interesting one. The product boils down to promises on paper. Easily copied and replicated, insurance products are rarely differentiators, at least not for very long. In insurance, perhaps more so than in most other businesses, Branson is right: people are, in fact, our product.
It therefore follows that for an insurance company to be successful it had better take care of its greatest asset and its most important product. At Trisura we very much value our employees.
We have worked hard at trying to create an exceptional working environment for our people by developing a great culture with shared values and a positive vision of the future; a company that people can be proud of and want to work for.
We regularly survey our employees what they think of Trisura, and where and how we can do better for them. Our engagement scores are extremely high (in the 90’s) and are world class. This tells me we are on the right track.
Reinforcing this are two recent independent acknowledgements. For the second time, we are pleased to have been named to the AON list of Canada’s best employers. We were also thrilled to have recently won the inaugural Insurance Business Canada award for Employer of Choice. To be recognized for this distinction from all the insurance companies and brokerages in Canada is incredibly humbling.
As Branson says, our people are our greatest asset and they are our product. They are also our brand. In short, we are nothing without the individuals that make up our team.
I believe the best is yet to come for Trisura and that we have a bright future, despite all of the change and uncertainty looming in the insurance world. This is because I also believe we have amazing people.
I would like to thank all of them for their effort, dedication and excellent work. I would also like to thank all of our brokers for their strong and unwavering support.
All the best to you and your families this coming holiday season and for the new year to come. Best regards and thank you again for your friendship.

KNOWING IS GOOD. DOING IS BETTER

KNOWING IS GOOD. DOING IS BETTER

BY TINA MCAVELLA

I HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED WITH THE URGENCY OF DOING. KNOWING IS NOT ENOUGH; WE MUST APPLY. BEING WILLING IS NOT ENOUGH; WE MUST DO.

~ LEONARDO DA VINCI

At Trisura, innovation around product and services is considered a strategic imperative! We are applying what we know and we are committing resources to activities that progress ideas. Why?

• CHANGE, CHANGE AND MORE CHANGE

Being forward thinking will ensure we are able to anticipate and navigate change. True to our entrepreneurial roots, we are constantly looking for opportunity in the changes that are impacting our Brokers and their customers.

• MORE OF THE SAME IS NOT ENOUGH
We view innovation as critical to cultivating our valued partnerships and maintaining our relevance with our brokers.

• ENGAGED STAFF ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE BUSINESS

It also helps keep our talented team engaged and offers an additional piece to a compelling employment story offered to prospective employees.

Placing increased emphasis on innovation in 2016, we learned that being innovative is a cultural mindset. We are fortunate. We are not encumbered by heavy legacy systems. This, together with being Canadian owned and controlled, ensures we can be nimble when a good opportunity presents itself.

We also find ourselves thinking broadly about product. What we offer is much more than a contract. Our promise is to deliver an exceptional experience with every transaction. This means that we are thinking about how we deliver our product and what ancillary services add true value.

HELP WANTED!

Finally, we understand that the best innovation does not happen in a vacuum. We are looking to our strategic partners, including brokers, vendors and insureds in order to add necessary context to our pursuit of new ideas that will land successfully in the market. In 2016, we introduced the following new products:

• Cyber Liability Policy
• Social Engineering Coverage
• Trisura Online Non-Profit Directors’ & Officers’ Liability
• Side A Difference in Conditions for Directors & Officers
• Contractor Bond Portal

In addition, we also added 4 more customized products that were developed with our brokers and their clients. Looking ahead to 2017, we have 9 products currently in varying stages of development. All of this development has been enriched by feedback collected from our business partners.

We know the importance of continuing to seek out new opportunities to innovate and are acting with suitable urgency! True to our culture we are engaging in the marketplace, listening for opportunities to make a difference and offer a solution. These opportunities are brought back and cultivated from concept to launch execution. Not all concepts make it through to a launch as we need to be sure that the concept is worthy of a leading specialty lines insurer. This is consistent with Trisura’s general business philosophy of acting with discipline and passion in all aspects of the operation.

Innovation is not a project at Trisura. It is a natural extension of being entrepreneurial. We are convinced that nurturing innovation is imperative to our continued success and the success of our partner brokers.

On November 30th, Insurance Business Canada hosted their inaugural Insurance Business Awards night, for the purpose of acknowledging and celebrating the shared success of those working in the industry. Hundreds of insurance professionals gathered at the Liberty Grand near Lake Ontario in downtown Toronto to enjoy champagne and hopefully to enjoy victory. There were 19 awards up for grabs and when all was said and done, Trisura was not left empty handed. The winner of the Employer of Choice Award was presented to Cindy Grant, head of Trisura’s Human Resources department, thanks to the decision of a committee of esteemed judges who chose Trisura as the best among 6 other formidable nominees.

This is Trisura’s second employer-related award of 2016, having won the Aon Best Employer’s in Canada award earlier in the same month. Check out some pictures from the Insurance Business Awards below.
