Toronto hadn’t seen rain like this for months. The night before Trisura’s Steve Carreiro placed his cardboard and sleeping bag on the pavement, 18 mm of precipitation fell (more than the entire month of March and most of February). The rain continued well into the next day as Steve and 56 other business and community leaders prepared themselves to give up the dryness and comfort of their homes to sleep in the streets for a night; the requirement for taking part in Covenant House’s annual charity event.
The Covenant House Next Generation Sleep Out took place the night of April 9th, 2015, and has raised over $209,000 so far, well beyond the goal of $190,000. Steve followed suit, also exceeding his donation target thanks to the generosity of friends, family, and co-workers. “Lights out for the soggy slug!!” was the message from Steve in the late hours of the night, “Fighting the elements to bring awareness to youth homelessness. This has been an unbelievable experience”. He also took the opportunity to further extend his thanks to donators for supporting such a great charity.
Covenant House Toronto is Canada’s largest homeless youth agency, providing a wide range of services to 3,000 youth annually. More than just a shelter, Covenant House educates, counsels, trains, and offers health care services that support less fortunate youth 24/7. Trisura has taken this cause to heart, having participated in past events, and will continue to jump at the chance to do our part in remedying Toronto’s homeless crisis.
