SHIRLEY LEWIS RETIRES AFTER FIFTY YEARS OF INSURANCE INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE

SHIRLEY LEWIS RETIRES AFTER FIFTY YEARS OF INSURANCE INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE

After 5 decades in the insurance industry, one of our most valuable employees is taking the step into retirement. Trisura will certainly miss Shirley Lewis’ tireless contributions to the administrative and marketing aspects of the company, as well as the many ways in which she contributed to our overall success and prosperity.

It all started when Shirley graduated from business college and took an underwriting position at the Economical in 1965. A dozen years later, after being out of the workforce for a short period of time to raise her children, she started working at Lackner McLennan Insurance in 1978. At Lackner McLennan, she trained producers and was involved with consulting to other brokerages until 1991, when Shirley relocated to the General Toronto Area. Here she took a position as Manager of Customer Service at The Insurers (the precursor of IFG and subsequently Benson-Kearley). In 1995, Shirley left the Insurers to work with Insurance Network Solutions (INS) – the beginnings of what is now HUB International. At INS, she was introduced to Mike George, who at the time was the Toronto Branch Manager of London Guarantee Insurance Company. Then, in early 1998, Shirley joined London Guarantee, working closely with Mike overseeing marketing and broker relations on a National basis. Shirley lived through the sale of London Guarantee to St. Paul and ultimate merger with Travelers. In 2011, she ‘retired’ from Travelers and joined Trisura on a part-time consulting basis in marketing and broker relations.

On May 13th, 2015, friends, colleagues, and family gathered in the board room at Trisura’s head office in Toronto for wine, cheese, and speeches. President & CEO Mike George beamed with admiration for all the good work Shirley has done for the company, and for the unrivalled support she’s provided him over the two-decades they’ve known each other. Shirley’s son and former co-worker at Trisura, Rob Litt, reiterated some of Mike’s sentiments and also added emphasis on his mom’s ability to excel in all her relationships, both professional and personal. The woman-of-honour then took the stand, inspiring the room with encouragement to self-analyse; to always focus on what motivates you, and to embody Trisura’s vision of a ‘step above’ every single day. The celebration then moved to Terroni on Adelaide Street in down-town Toronto, where the great food, drink, and conversation continued until the evening expired.

Shirley has been a role model and mentor to many in the insurance business, always abiding by the mantra that people are important, and that lasting relationships are of greater value than achieving personal advancement. Shirley already has plans to keep herself busy through volunteer work at a summer camp. She’s also promised to drop in from time to time, to make sure everyone has memorized the company’s strategic vision! We extend our sincerest thanks to Shirley for all she has contributed to Trisura, as well as a big congratulations for reaching the conclusion of a long and successful career.

A BLACK & WHITE NIGHT: THE STARLIGHT INSURANCE GALA

A BLACK & WHITE NIGHT: THE STARLIGHT INSURANCE GALA

On Saturday May 9th, Trisura attended the 21st Annual Starlight Insurance Gala. The event brings the insurance community together in order to raise money for Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada, a charity which supports children diagnosed with a serious illness or life-altering injury. The theme this year was “Black & White”- a classy take that would capture the elegance of the cause, the venue (the Carlu in Toronto), and the evening itself.

Since it began in 1994, the Starlight Insurance Gala has raised over $3 million for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, bringing vital support to critically ill children and their families in the hours of greatest need. Thanks to the tireless dedication of volunteers and continued generosity of donating parties, Starlight is able to offer important initiatives that ease the stress and boredom of hospitalization, from the time a child is hospitalized to when they recover or cope with their illness after returning home. “Wishes”, “Fun Centres”, “Day Brighteners”, and “Escapes” are but a few programs that give children an opportunity to create memories while leaving the ‘sick’ behind.

Trisura is proud to be an annual sponsor, once again providing the plush mascots for the event’s red carpet raffle. This year, 250 Zebras were handed out, appropriate for the overall Black & White theme. Altogether, the night was a great success, raising over $220,000 from donations to help the continued efforts of the Starlight Children’s Foundation. IT HAPPENED ON HABITAT DAY

IT HAPPENED ON HABITAT DAY

The morning of May 7th, 2015 was sunny and blue skied, as Trisurians from Toronto and Montreal pulled in to their respective build sites at Brimley Rd in Markham, and Rue Turcot in Montreal. After introductions and safety briefing (and copious coffee guzzling), participants were geared-up with complete construction uniforms: reflective vests, hard-hats, belts, gloves, glasses, and steel-toed boots.

Both job sites serve as the location for community housing projects already in progress. At this stage of construction, our Habitat for Humanity volunteers were asked to assist with interior housing work such as insulating, dry-walling, and sealing.

One of the ways Habitat for Humanity functions as an effective charitable organization is through hands-on work. Volunteer builders have a chance to literally and figuratively support the foundation of community housing projects. Whether it’s driving in the final nails, or donating funds to lay the concrete; Trisura highly recommends supporting this great organization. It is a safe and fun environment for corporate teams to lend a hand…with no previous construction experience required!

All the participants from Trisura enjoyed stepping away from their desks for the day, working together through a different medium. The optimism brought to the job-site at the beginning of the day developed into a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction by the end. What happened on Habitat day was more than just teamwork; it was education, experience gained, and community building in more than one sense.

Habitat for Humanity Greater Toronto Area (Habitat GTA) and Habitat pour l’humanité (HFHC) are non-profit housing organizations that mobilize volunteers and community partners to provide affordable housing and promote homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. By owning their own home, families are able to achieve greater stability, and improve their overall health, while building equity for their future. Trisura continues to be a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity, and looks forward to future opportunities to collaborate in serving Canadian communities. For more information about how you can get involved in Habitat community projects, visit their website.

TRISURA MAINTAINS FULL-PARTNER SUPPORT WITH IBAC

TRISURA MAINTAINS FULL-PARTNER SUPPORT WITH IBAC

On May 6th, 2015, The Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC) announced that Trisura Guarantee has maintained its support of the Broker Identity Program at the Full Partner level. We are very pleased to share the good news. An excerpt from the official IBAC Press Release:

“The program’s centre-piece is the BIP symbol known as the BIPPER. The symbol captures the value that insurance brokers bring their clients: choice, coverage, security and peace of mind. By investing in the program, Trisura Guarantee supports the campaign whose purpose is to raise awareness of the value of the insurance broker distribution network.

“Trisura is a broker focused company because we recognize the value and importance an independent broker brings to the insurance process for insureds and carriers alike. We further believe IBAC plays a critical role in supporting this view and as such are honoured to be a full partner of the Broker Identity Program” -Mike George, Trisura’s President & CEO.

“Trisura is a special organization with a unique role and they are very aware that branding is critical. Their continuing support is most welcome”– Dan Danyluk, IBAC Chief Executive Officer.” “
